Originally favoring integration of the former Portuguese colony with Indonesia. APODETI resurfaced in 2000. First launched on 27 May 1974, early support for the party came from individuals associated with an Indonesian-promoted rebellion of 1957 ¹, certain of the Arab community of Dili, along with a numer of liurai or little kings, the most important of which was Guiherme Gon{\c}clves. The first president of the political party was Arnaldo dos Reis Araujo ², a former collaborator with the Japanese. Minuscule in membership, APODETI nevertheless became a major instrument through which Indonesian intelligence serives ³ mounted their subversion and later annexation of the territory.
