17世紀の時点で ポルトガル人たちは ティモール島をおおきく２つに分けていた。 一つが Servião、 もう一つが Belu である。

Ruoghtly, Servião encompassed the Dawan-speaking Atoni lands in the west plus the Helong domain of Kupang. Although the ethnic terms Tetun and Belu are approximately interchangeable, the province of Belu did not just include the Tetun domains; it also enccompassed all the domains in the east, where some fifteen different languages are spoken.
